My time as Chair of the PTAMy abiding memories are of carnival time. In those days, Simmonds Removals used to provide a lorry for a float. Early on carnival morning, a feverish band of mums and dads and grand parents would get to work with unpromising looking bits of painted cardboard, material, hammers, nails, step ladders and after a lot of shouting and sweating and tearing out of hair, a beautiful vision - like a film set - would emerge. As everyone knew I wasn’t artistic (especially after my attempt at a papier mache lute for the medieval themed float. It was truly spectacularly awful and my poor son had to “strum” it). I was usually asked to provide the music. One year (Snow White year), the children all performed a dance to “Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho It’s off to work we go”. They had to repeat it about 10 times while the judging took place and then had to listen to the tune 100 times as the float made slow progress through the town. Everyone was heartily sick of it by the end and I learned that it might be better to have more than one tune on the music system. We did win that year though! Happy days! Viv Hemmings |
